12 Days of Bookmas – What to buy – The Oddball

If I said I wasn’t a bit of an oddball, I’d be blatantly lying. And books are the perfect gifts for oddballs, because there are so many awesome odd, bizarre books out there that are just amazing. Here are just a few. 1 – John Dies at the End by David Wong You all know I love this book (and I love the sequel even more) and so it’s really no surprise that it would pop up on this list. This book is absolutely absurd and full of penis jokes, but it is also just really entertaining and a whole lot more clever than it’s crassness would have you believe. It is quite a difficult book to explain, but it basically begins when two buddies take a drug called Soy Sauce which allows you to see and experience things beyond your own reality. It’s really awesome. Get it here: The Book Depository, Amazon.   2 – The Library at Mount Char  by Scott Hawkins I read and reviewed this one recently and I can tell …

Book Review: The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness

Patrick Ness is one of my absolute favourite authors, and it will never cease to amaze me how unique each piece of his work is. And this piece is definitely unique. “Not everyone has to be the Chosen One. Not everyone has to be the guy who saves the world. Most people just have to live their lives the best they can, doing things that are great for them, having great friends, trying to make their lives better, loving people properly. All the while knowing that the world makes no sense but trying to find a way to be happy anyway.” What’s it about:  This book is set in a town where there are  Indie Kids. You know the type, tragically alternative, always the ones that the interesting (and dangerous things happen to). The Bella Swans and the Clary Frays. The ones who fall in love with vampires and fight ghosts. This story is not about them. This story is not about them. This story is about a group of non-chosen ones who just want to …

July Book Haul Parts Two and Three

So I have two bookhauls today (I guess they could be merged into one, but I think they go nicely as separate entities). If you missed Part One you can view it (and all my book-hoarding craziness) here. Firstly, we have my SUPER B&N LEATHERBOUND CLASSICS BOOK HAUL! LOOK AT ALL ITS MAJESTY!!! Beautiful aren’t they? *hugs them all* And now I have Part Three of this month’s book haul. They are probably three of my most anticipated book releases of the year (along with Lair of Dreams by Libba Bray, which I also received in ebook format) I’ve already read an extended preview of The Dinosaur Lords from Netgalley and although it’s a bit … unusual I am enjoying it (how could I not enjoy something with dinosaurs? how?) and I’m a few chapters in to Armada. I can’t wait for The Rest of Us Just Live Here as Patrick Ness is one of my absolute favourite authors. I was so thankful for receiving this final copy from Walker Books after not being able …

Lit Lists: Beloved Fictional Animals

So this is my first of this new feature where I make a list of books (with photos. of course) based on a particular theme. The themes will range from very broad to very specific depending on where my little heart takes me. It could be a wild ride (probably not though. reading lists of books is actually a rather sedate activity now isnt it?). The books may also be either books I’ve read, am currently reading, or books on my TBR. I may also take requests for list themes. We’ll see. We all love fictional animals, often more than the people in the story. But they often go the way of Old Yeller (also a fictional animal, thus demonstrating my point). I don’t know for certain why this is, but I’m working with the theory that authors are just plain evil. Although many of the animals on this list do make it through the book/series alive and unmaimed, I’m sorry if this brings up any painful memories for anyone. 1. Manchee from The Chaos …

Recom-Monday-tions – A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness

“The monster showed up just after midnight. As they do.” Well, the weekend is over, and the new work week has begun. So how about a book recommendation to ease your pain? Although this one is likely to cause as much pain as it relieves, but is totally worth it. “Stories are wild creatures, the monster said. When you let them loose, who knows what havoc they might wreak?” Conor has been having nightmares ever since his mother started her treatment. Until one night, a monster arrives to tell him three stories. A beautiful and heart-rending story, and also beautifully illustrated, A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness is a book that will stay with you for your entire life. It is a book about stories; about how stories have to power to show us the truth. This book will creep up on you and punch you right in the feels! This book is destined to end up a classic. “Stories are the wildest things of all. Stories chase and bite and hunt.” Find it here: Goodreads. TheBookDepository. …

May Book Haul

May Book Haul! So I bought…a few…. books during May. Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson (White’s Pocket Edition). I received this instead of the White’s Fine Edition which I have ordered a billion fricken times and always received a different edition. It’s getting quite frustrating I can tell you that. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley (Road’s Publishing). Another one to add to my Frankenstein collection. This edition is so so so beautiful! I need to buy more of these! Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll (Penguin Clothbound Edition). I have wanted this for so long but just never picked it up. Now I have it and I’m pretty darn happy about that. Silvermay by James Moloney. This book has the most beautiful cover. It’s a tragedy that it doesn’t come in hardcover! You can check out my review of this Here. The Crane Wife by Patrick Ness. So I already own this in paperback, and I haven’t read it, but I saw the hardcover for like $3 and decided to buy it. What can …

Coffee Book Tag!

This is actually my first tag on this blog. I frequently get them on instagram and tumblr (which I am absolutely terrible at doing), but this is my first one here, so thank you, Marianna from Impressionblend for tagging me. This tag is called the Coffee book tag (obviously), and although I am not really a coffee drinker at all (but completely obsessed with tea) I think I can manage. I also might add my own tea related ones to the end.  I will tag Cait at PaperFury and Sarah at Commas and Ampersands. 1. BLACK: NAME A SERIES THAT’S TOUGH TO GET INTO BUT HAS HARDCORE FANS. The Magicians by Lev Grossman. Personally, I love this book, but I know a lot of people hate it. It might have something to do with all the characters kinda being awful people, but I don’t think this series would have worked if they weren’t. Although, I’ve only read the first book… 2. PEPPERMINT MOCHA: NAME A BOOK THAT GETS MORE POPULAR DURING THE WINTER OR A FESTIVE …
