Halloween Reads!

Happy Halloween! So I am a lover of horror fiction! (I even helped write a horror novel which you can find here – but warning it’s super bloody – and it’s sequel, which I co-authored and had a bigger part in writing here ). Anyway… shameless self-promotion over, here are my top Halloween reads! The literary horror – The Lesser Dead by Christopher Buehlman Yeah… I know, I talk about this book a lot, but that’s because it’s definitely one of my absolute favourites! A vampire who was turned as a 14 year old boy, tries to stop a group of crazy vampire children from ruining everyone’s fun. A vampire tale with a very Fitzgerald/Salinger-esque vibe; what more could you want? Review The spooky-but-not-scary horror – The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman This tale about the undead residences of a graveyard raising a toddler after his family is killed is super fun! And you know Neil Gaiman is always worth your time! The actually-really-super-creepy horror book – Birdbox by Josh Malerman Another one I talk about ALL THE …

Best Books of 2015 (if I do say so myself)

Welcome everyone to 2016! It’s time to set a new TBR and a new Goodreads challenge to fail! Yay! But first, I’m going to share with you my favourite books I read in 2015. I’ve raved about pretty much all of these books before, so I’m not going to make a big speech about why each book is awesome and why you should read it. I will just link my review for each. How’s that? They are in no particular order (except 1 and 2 which were my favourites of the year!). 1 – The Lesser Dead by Christopher Buehlman – Review 2 – The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins – Review 3 – Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas – Review 4 – A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas – Review 5 – Sabriel by Garth Nix – Review 6 – The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly by Stephanie Oakes – Review 7 – The Invasion of the Tearling by Erika Johansen – Review 8 – Golden Son …

Book Review: The Lesser Dead by Christopher Buehlman

Where to start with The Lesser Dead, or as I like to call it The Babysitters Club: Hellish Vampire Edition.  “He gets away with it because he’s strong.’ ‘This is the story of mankind.’ What’s it about? Imagine being a 13 year old forever. That’s reality for Joey Peacock. Joey and his little family of vampires live in the underground tunnels of the New York subway, where they mostly keep to themselves, feeding without killing. His ‘life’ is pretty carefree, going to clubs, watching soap operas, but he finds himself struck with a whole lot of responsibility when he finds a group of murderous vampire children, and a parrot. What I thought? So in a nutshell. It’s fantastic. The back of the book says “As much F. Scott Fitzgerald as Dean Koontz.”  Well, I’ve never read Dean Koontz, but I reckon this is probably right. But there’s also something a bit Salinger-ish about it too. “Happiness is the province of those who ask few questions. I remember, even before this was visited upon me, how I …

Currently reading

So after finishing Sabriel by Garth Nix, I was going to pick up Lirael straight away, but the pages of my copy are kinda wonky and so it’s currently sitting under a big pile of books to straighten it out. So when this arrived in the mail, I decided, why not?  I don’t really know much about this book except that it’s about subway-dwelling vampires and that it has had some amazing reviews. I actually ordered a hardcover copy of this but instead I received a paperback, and also only an uncorrected proof copy as well. Seriously. That’s about the opposite of a hardcover! Stern words were had with the bookseller. That’s for sure. I am also reading The Invasion of the Tearling by Erika Johansen on my Kobo, The Fever by Megan Abbott on my phone, and listening to the Audiobook of A Game of Thrones. Yeah. I’m definitely not a one book at a time woman. What are you guys reading at the moment? Do you read multiple books at once?
